Below are some examples of classroom guidance lessons that are taught throughout the school year.
It's Hard to Fix a Wrinkled Heart
Grades K-2: Empathy and Kindness
Using the story Chrysanthemum, students are taught a lesson on kindness and how their words make others feel. In the story, Chrysanthemum is picked on, and students are able to see how these mean words "wrinkle" her heart. This visual helps students understand that you cannot take back your words once they are said.

The Marshmallow Test
Grades 3-5: Self-Control and Delayed Gratification
The Marshmallow Test was originally done in the 1960's at Stanford University. In this guidance lesson, students are given a marshmallow and told they can eat it now, or wait 20 minutes and receive a second marshmallow. During the waiting period, students complete a self-assessment on self-control, and following the "test", students work in small groups to reflect on the activity and discuss self-control and delayed gratification.

Tucker the Turtle
Grades K-2: Managing Emotions and Problem Solving
Tucker the Turtle is a 2-series guidance lesson I teach to Kindergarten students. The first lesson teaches students how to "think like a turtle" by calming their body down before reacting to situations. In the second lesson, Tucker teaches students how to problem solve by taking time to think about the situation. The kids love when Tucker visits their classroom!
